GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany: Hearing the Beatles’ “Hey Jude!” sounded like music to midfielder Jude Bellingham’s eye as he headed home early to give England a 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening Euro 2024 Group C match on Sunday.
The 20-year-old was named man of the match after dominating England’s attack and receiving a roaring ovation from the fans at Outback Stadium.
“I listen to the Beatles a lot,” Bellingham said in a news release. “My style of music is a bit old-school, so this suits me.”
“I really enjoy playing in front of the England fans. It’s a different experience for me because I’m obviously playing abroad. So when I get to hear the England fans singing for the first time every few months, I really enjoy it.”
“They showed me a lot of appreciation and love. I tried to give it back with my performance and energy on the court.”
Bellingham had an outstanding debut for Real Madrid, he was named La Liga Player of the Season, scored 19 goals, helped the team win the La Liga title by 10 points and helped the team win its 15th Champions League title.
On Sunday, he caused endless trouble for Serbian defensemen, who resorted to tougher tactics to try to tether him.
“I’m feeling really confident going into the game. I can’t wait to play in such a great competition with such great players. So I think you can tell I’m enjoying playing football and wanting to make an impact,” Bellingham said.
“We wanted to take the ball away from them because I think we wanted to create an atmosphere for the fans to get behind the team. It helps when you’re attacking aggressively, but also when you don’t have the ball, try to be aggressive offensively.
“Yeah, I took a few kicks, but I think it’s something I’ve gotten used to over the last few years. It’s just about trying to react the right way and not lose it. I felt like I handled it pretty well tonight.”
