Ban on larger bottles on planes: the 100 ml limit remains and everyone has to go back to the old rules

Some airports in the European Union have already lifted restrictions on carrying a bottle of liquid up to 100 ml on board aircraft due to more advanced passenger baggage screening equipment, but according to the decision of the European Commission, these airports will have to lift this restriction. , Reinstate these restrictions from September 1.

At the end of July, the committee adopted a supplement to previous air traffic safety measures concerning the inspection of liquids, aerosols and gels that can be taken into the aircraft cabin.

This means that you may not carry more than 100ml of liquids, aerosols or gels in one bag. The total maximum you may carry is one litre.

Several EU airports have removed restrictions on bottles and tubes of liquids, aerosols and gels with a maximum capacity of 100 ml following the installation of new explosive detection systems for passenger baggage (EDSCB).

The revised implementing regulation will enter into force on September 1, which means that from then on, the previous restrictions will apply to all airports in the EU, including those with EDSCB systems installed. For airports that do not have these systems, everything remains as it is.

The Committee stressed that this measure was not taken in response to some new threat, but rather was a temporary technical solution that would ensure the highest safety standards in air traffic.

The new EDSCB systems replace traditional X-ray equipment and are able to identify objects and substances more accurately. I can identify explosives in various cosmetics, liquids or electronic devices. They also allow faster inspection of luggage.

However, according to a technical report from the committee late last year, the new optical scanners are not completely reliable when checking liquids larger than 330 milliliters.

The European Commission has therefore decided to take a temporary measure to extend the ban on the import of liquids exceeding 100 ml in one package until further notice and until all doubts about the reliability of the new technology have been eliminated.
