The Department of Health, in partnership with Reach Digital Health, Avert and the Elton John AIDS Foundation, will convene a virtual workshop in June 2024 to share insights and discuss the impact, experiences and future opportunities of using digital health to improve young people’s access to sexual, reproductive and mental healthcare.
this B-Wise Seminar To be held via Zoom on June 13, 2024, the platform will release the results of the baseline and final survey of B-Wise Smart Bot conducted in the country last year. B-Wise Smart Bot addresses the challenges faced by young people in a society where discussions about sexual health often remain taboo or stigmatized, and the findings provide strong evidence of the platform’s ability to change users’ attitudes, knowledge and behavior.
Combined with an extensive Facebook outreach, the B-Wise Smartbot is a pioneering effort by the department’s interactive digital health programme, B-Wise Health, which is designed to address the pressing issues of high teenage pregnancy rates and high rates of HIV infection among adolescents in South Africa. The programme draws on findings from the 2012 Youth Sexuality Survey, which revealed significant gaps in open discussions of sexual health within families.
B-Wise empowers South Africans aged 15 to 24 to seek information and support without fear by providing a private, AI-powered chat solution on WhatsApp and interactive on Facebook, giving them the tools they need to make informed health choices 24/7.
The workshop presenters will provide an overview of Young Africa Live’s B-Wise project, share analysis of the baseline and end-line surveys on the platform’s reach, impact and potential, and discuss areas for growth, including enhancements, sustainability and future collaborations. The gathering will also provide participants with an opportunity to ask questions of the panel and discuss the survey and the broader role of digital health interventions in supporting young people.
This research-led symposium is open to organizations and individuals working in youth support and development around the world, including health educators, peer educators, policy makers and digital health innovators. It provides a unique opportunity to learn about the role of digital platforms such as artificial BroadCast Unitedligence and chat in modern youth engagement and health education.
