August’s work: Planting strawberries, “collecting” marigolds and zucchini

If you sow pansies or daisies in July, transplant them into the flower bed in late August.

Of course, during this time you can also save seeds of vegetables you want to grow next year, such as tomatoes, beans, peas, green beans, last year’s Swiss chard, cucumbers and zucchini.

In early August, beans are harvested in the garden, and most beans are ripe by the end of August. Zucchini and green beans are also harvested, and there are plenty of tomatoes for tomato sauce. Potatoes can also be harvested, preferably a day or two after the rain, before the voles eat them.

Weeding is still a work in progress as the sun is relentless some days, but after August 15th, the heat subsided and with a little rain, the weeds started growing again.

This is the time for planting crops, and some fresh autumn rains in September and October will not disturb them. This applies mainly to leafy vegetables, salads, chicory, spinach and Swiss chard. This period is very suitable for growing strawberries. In one-year intensive cultivation, it is recommended to plant strawberry seedlings in late July or early August, because then the seedlings will produce a safe and high-quality crop.
