“I am running for president. I want to serve the country like I always wanted to,” said Ashwin Adhin, a member of parliament and former vice president.
The NDP vice chair said he announced his candidacy for the top job on the NDP board, led by chair Jenny Simmons, for two reasons. The first was that he couldn’t see people suffering. The second was because he was used to taking on increasingly difficult cases.
“From a very young age, I thought… I saw this in people with disabilities and so on… I didn’t see the suffering that was caused through no fault of the person. The second is that the cases I take are usually getting harder and harder. If it looks almost unsalvageable, then you should call me,” Ading said in an interview with Culturu TV.
The New Democratic Party member said he took into account the ambitions of others, including Simmons, who also wants to run for the high office, and said there is nothing wrong with the Purple Party having multiple presidential candidates.
Indeed, there is a very big question within the NDP about when the new generation will emerge. “We need the next generation of politics. And you don’t underestimate it because the new generation and the young people are 133,000 people. The new generation wants to see something new and I want to give it substance. When I was 18, I was lucky enough to spend time with my grandfathers, both politicians and intellectuals.
Bouterse and my team gave me the space to grow fast and see a lot of things because I absorb very quickly and see things very quickly. So if I have that experience and as a young person I can contribute energy, experience and approach that you can learn from, then we have a strong asset to really make a difference with a new strategy. Because the old strategy from 1975 to today is not working anymore,” Adhin said.
He believes that the new strategy means the need for national independent planning independent of politics. On the other hand, we must also move towards the vision of socio-economic development.
Ahim said that people have a lot of expectations from the NDP because in his eyes, the NDP is the light in the tunnel for Surinamese people. That is why he proposed during the NDP internal elections to draw up a consensus list in which Ramon Abrahams will be the chairman and Simmons will be the first vice-chairman.
Given Ading’s experience and achievements, he disagreed to serve as the third vice chairman.
