Simón Calzadilla, secretary general of the Movement for Venezuela (MPV) party, said on Friday that Venezuelans will defend the results of the July 28 presidential election in the streets “in a peaceful and constitutional manner.”
Through a press release, Calzadilla, who supports the candidacy of his opponent Edmundo González Urrutia, insisted that citizens will defend “their right to a country where they can live with dignity.”
The 21.6 million Venezuelans who called the vote “will not allow their future to be taken away from them, nor will they allow greater damage to be done than what has already been done. “We will move this country forward and the people demand that their decision be respected,” he continued.
Likewise, he expressed confidence that the eventual change of government in a country ruled by Chavismo since 1999 would take place “peacefully,” despite President Nicolas Maduro’s warnings about suspected violent plans by the main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD).
Calzadilla asked public officials to vote without fear because “voting is secret” and “the only thing they have to deal with is the voting machine.”
He added: “Our only worry is to continue living with this government.”
This Friday, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) pledged to ensure security during the presidential elections so that citizens can vote “freely and peacefully.”
The statements came after Maduro denounced the UDF plan, without presenting evidence, claiming fraud and creating violence in the framework of the elections, in which Venezuelans will choose “peace or war.”
