Andreni and Antonelli: A Journey Through Poetry

Message on Whatsapp, October 2023: “As you can hear, they are all live tracks, without interruptions or additions. They are not perfect, but perfection is not human… emotions are.” Along with the message, there is an audio file: “Season of Your Love” and two words: “Little preview”.

Recorded live on September 30 by Barbara Andreini (she is the author of the lyrics) and Gabriele Antonelli, 17 tracks + 1 track taken from Fabrizio De André, this journey has become material for some time: “Khorakhané – Storie di Fabrizio” is the title of the CD. Inside the box there are three lines of text that explain the point of departure: “With his music, Fabrizio De André constructs a focus on the human soul and its countless folds, telling extremely modern and current stories”.

Barbara and Gabriel are “soloists” (they call it a duet): she sings, he plays the accordion. On paper, the project recalls the musical duo Musica Nuda, formed by Petra Magoni and Ferruccio Spinetti: here as here, the works are stripped down, reduced (instrumentally) to the essence, because the intention is clear and strong, both to get to the heart of the song and to use the voice as an instrument.

The journey proposed by Barbara (soprano and voice teacher) and Gabriel is powerful and goes deep: it starts with “Marinella’s Song” in Mina’s version, then continues to “Song of Lost Love”, “Season of Losing Your Love”, and then again to other works of Faber, “Geordie”, “January Prayer”, “The Judge”, “Player Jones”, “Khorakhané (With the Wind)”, “The Ballad of the Hanged”, “Don Rafi”, “The Fisherman” and “Bocca di Rosa”.

The result is extraordinary and beautiful: FdA’s “lower” and masculine, deep and unique voice rises and becomes feminine in Barbara’s “higher” voice, while the accordion dialogues and accompanies, like an embrace, the lyrics.
