Discussing Palau’s heritage protection and tourism promotion
On August 13, 2024, Dr. Yuriko Kikuchi, Assistant Professor at the Institute for Advanced Asian Studies, University of Tokyo, accompanied by Ambassador Hiroyuki Orikasa and Mr. Tsunesuke Aoki, Chief Representative of the JICA Palau Office, paid a visit to His Excellency Surangir S. Whipps II at the President’s Office in Koror.
The visit follows discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Palau President Soulanger S. Whipps at a summit in Tokyo on June 14, 2023. At that meeting, the two leaders stressed the importance of preserving and documenting historic sites, reflecting their shared commitment to Palau’s cultural heritage and the preservation of Japanese-related historic sites in Palau as a way to strengthen bilateral relations between Japan and Palau. President Whipps requested Prime Minister Kishida to send a Japanese archaeologist to Palau.
Dr. Kikuchi is being sent to Palau on a preliminary survey mission by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to assist in the dispatch of a Japanese archaeologist to Palau in the near future and to restore the World War II Memorial Museum in Peleliu State. The museum, which will open on September 15, 2024, is a joint effort between the Government of Palau, the Peleliu State Government, the U.S. Embassy, and the Australian Embassy in Palau.
