this Daily Maverick Journalists received top honours at the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards (SBSJA) ceremony held in Johannesburg on Saturday evening, July 20.
The film won a total of four awards, followed by South African Broadcasting Corporation and News 24 Three journalists won three awards respectively.
The Journalist of the Year Award went to Daily MaverickArticles by Lucas LedwabaSeeking Healing Justice and Gold mining widow struggles with trauma and povertyand won the award in the feature film category.
along with Daily Maverick In just three years, Julia Evans has been awarded the Juby Mayet Rising Star of the Year title for her research into the use of electric vehicles in South Africa’s minibus taxi industry.
The fourth award is the Visual Journalism Award.

The awards are organised by the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef).
“In an era when disinformation and misinformation threaten social stability, Sanev believes these awards are crucial to raising public awareness of journalistic ethics.
“By recognizing outstanding work, the award helps build public trust and credibility in the media, reinforcing the indispensable role of journalists in providing reliable information to the public,” the forum said ahead of the ceremony.
Press freedom in South Africa faces many challenges
Standard Bank is a sponsor of the awards ceremony. Attending the ceremony, Standard Bank CEO Renjisa Fuzile said that a free press is the cornerstone of a vibrant and functioning democracy.
“We must protect journalists’ rights to report without fear of censorship or retaliation.”
He said the road to press freedom in South Africa was indeed difficult.
“This year, we mark the 195th anniversary of the initial battle lines being drawn — a testament to the tenacity of those who fought for the right to know and be informed.”
He added that in a world dominated by social media, it is important to remember that journalism is more than just a profession.
“With the lens of a camera, the swipe of a pen, and the tap of a keyboard, you have the power to influence public opinion, drive social change, and hold those in power accountable.”
New Sanef Chairman
At the event, outgoing chairperson Sbu Ngalwa introduced editor-in-chief Nwabisa Makunga – Sowetanserves as the new Sanef Chairman.
Makunga said on LinkedIn, “Yesterday I was elected as the Chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum.
“I feel deeply responsible for this. The trust our industry has placed in us compels me to repay that trust with my dedication to our industry.
“The work this organization does to defend our free press is extraordinary, its impact far-reaching, and the demand for it is growing every day.
“I’m honored to be on this journey with my amazing colleagues.”
