On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, His Excellency Hiroyuki Orikasa, Ambassador of Japan to Palau, handed over a brand new 30-passenger bus to Airai Elementary School. The Grassroots Human Security Assistance Project (GGP) handover ceremony was held at the Airai Elementary School campus and was attended by Minister of Education Dr. Dale Jenkins, representatives of the Ministry of Education management team and other guests who celebrated the occasion with students and teachers.
For Airai Elementary School, improving the safety, efficiency, comfort and reliability of school buses is one of the most important issues for the benefit of the community it serves. At the request of Ms. Norma Marsai, the principal of Airai Elementary School, the Japanese government provided a grant of US$90,745 to purchase a school bus. With this new 30-passenger bus provided by the Japanese government in 2017 in addition to the existing 30-passenger bus, the school is now able to provide students with safer and more reliable buses.
“Yellow stands out more than other colors, and it sends the message to all other drivers that this car is carrying students. Protecting children is a community responsibility, and providing better transportation to help students get to school is indeed an important responsibility of ours,” said Ambassador Orikasa. “As a child growing up in rural Japan, I walked a long way to school every day, and I know how important it is to provide safe and reliable school transportation. I hope that students will enjoy school field trips and extracurricular activities, as well as their daily commutes with the new car,” Ambassador Orikasa continued.
The Japanese government launched the GGP in 1999 to meet the development needs of Palau’s grassroots activities. Since then, the Japanese Embassy in Palau has so far signed 102 grant contracts with schools, hospitals, state governments and non-governmental organizations.
