I recently spent a pleasant few days in Los Angeles promoting my new book, American Capitalism: A History (co-authored with Alan Greenspan). I was driving down Hollywood Boulevard in my cab, thinking everything was fine—the sun was shining, the people were beautiful, and, most importantly, I didn’t have a deadline to write something about Brexit—when I saw a giant red billboard with one word in big capital letters: BREXIT.

Fearing that I was going to go crazy eventually – it could only be a matter of time, given the pace and content of British political news – I asked the taxi driver if I had seen it wrong. He assured me that the sign was indeed there, an advertisement for Benedict Cumberbatch’s new film, called Civil War but known in the US simply as Brexit. I asked him what Brexit meant to him – interviewing taxi drivers is what foreign journalists call “research” – and he gave a very detailed summary of the whole tragic story. Few lobby journalists could have done better.
