Four hundred and fifty-eight (458) new recruits from the 254th batch of the Sri Lanka Navy Regular and Volunteer Corps graduated in a lively ceremony at the main parade ground of SLNS Nipuna, Boossa on 14th June 2024. Of these recruits, 355 belonged to the Regular Corps while the remaining 103 were from the Sri Lanka Navy Volunteer Corps.
Invited by Captain Chaminda Gunarathna, Commander, SLNS Nipuna, Rear Admiral Nalindra Jayasinghe, Commander, North-West Naval Area, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The recruits who performed exceptionally well during basic training were presented with awards by the chief guest in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
The 254th batch of Sri Lanka Navy recruits consisted of 274 sailors and 81 women sailors from the Regular Corps and 37 sailors and 66 women sailors from the Volunteer Corps. Among them, Recruit EAMLS Jayasinghe received the Best Recruit trophy. Female Recruit PAPM Peramuna received the highest score award in all subjects. Meanwhile, Recruit WMPKM Dissanayake received the Best Shooter Award. The Best Athlete Award was won by Recruit NHWK Dissanayake and Female Recruit WANA Weerapperuma. The “Sagara” Division was selected as the Best Division of the 254th Recruit.
In his address to the recruits, Rear Admiral Narindra Jayasinha congratulated the recruits on their successful completion of their training. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of embodying the qualities of a skilled and disciplined sailor in order to serve effectively in a technologically advanced navy. He opined that such dedication is essential in defending the motherland and ensuring that the hard-earned freedoms are passed on to future generations.
Rear Admiral Narindra Jayasinha stressed that it is the duty of every Navy personnel to perform the duties assigned to them diligently, especially in meeting the challenges posed by economic difficulties. He also said that the newly graduated sailors must apply the discipline they have learned during their training and be committed to performing any duties assigned to them by the Navy in the future. Finally, he also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the parents of the newly graduated recruits for agreeing to let their children join the Navy.
The drill performances of the newly graduated recruits added brilliance to the solemn ceremony, while the wonderful performances of the Navy Band and Art Troupe added more charm to the ceremony.
Members of the Venerable Maha Sangha, Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe, Commander Southern Naval District, Commodore Indika Gunawardena, Deputy District Commander, senior officers of Naval Headquarters and Southern Naval Command, officers of SLNS Nipuna, Chief Petty Officer WMGA Kumara and sailors and parents of the newly retired naval personnel were present on the occasion.
