A request has been made to build an ice plant and a sports boat at Khedhufushi

The City Council has asked the Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources to expedite the construction of an ice plant and sports boats in the area.

The request was made during a meeting between Khedhufushi Mayor Mohammed Atif and Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Ahmed Shyam yesterday.

The meeting took place yesterday morning at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources where Mayor Atif and the minister discussed the needs of the municipality in the fisheries sector.

During the meeting, Mayor Atif pointed out that young people in Khedhufushi are interested in fishing. He therefore requested the government to provide assistance to provide opportunities for young people in the field of fisheries.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources said the mayor proposed to expedite the construction of a sports boat and an ice factory, which will be jointly operated by MIFCO and the Khedhufushi Municipal Council once completed.

Regarding the ice factory, Minister Shiyam said the ice factory in Khedhufushi City is one of the 11 ice factories announced by the government. He said the ice factory has now been handed over to MIFCO and is in the bidding stage. He said he will soon build the wooden boats that the young people of Khedhufushi need.

During the meeting, Mayor Atif also discussed the issue of shark fishing with the minister, who said a study was being conducted to open up shark fishing and he was consulting with many stakeholders to find a solution to the problem.

The Mayor asked the government to provide assistance to the youths in the fisheries sector and the Minister said empowering the youths is the responsibility of President Mohammed Muizzu and is a very particular priority. He is also committed to providing opportunities to the youths in the fisheries sector.
