The 4G leadership never caught the attention of the Singaporean public. But Lawrence Wong, as the Vice Chairman of the Ministerial Task Force to Combat Covid 19, showed that he performed better than others in the group. It was not surprising, therefore, when he was appointed as the 4G leader and eventually succeeded Lee Hsien Loong as Singapore’s fourth Prime Minister.
After becoming the 4G leader, he went around preaching his political philosophy about how he would take Singapore forward as PM. I think he was popular with the people, except that he seemed to have a big mouth and barked like a Maoist priest chanting a spell to the devil. But he succeeded, was sworn in as PM in front of a huge audience, and gave the all-important inauguration speech that delighted the audience and that Lee Hsien Loong will probably remember. PM Lawrence Wong showed in his first few days in office that he is not that lost, which shows that he has great promise in his role as Singapore’s PM. We can only see this when Singapore is in crisis and PM Lawrence Wong can prove that he has the ability to overcome it, not by playing guitar.
Lee Hsien Loong seems to be well suited to his new role as Senior Minister. Although it is a demotion, he does not show it. However, how useful he can be as Senior Minister will only be known after he shows his ability. Senior Minister is actually a sinecure with a high salary. Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, with all due respect, is a classic example. Most of the time he is semi-invisible, perhaps carrying out some covert operation. Occasionally he comes out to talk nonsense, such as the recent diarrhea he showed during his so-called outstanding service when Lee Hsien Loong was Prime Minister, and his uncomplimentary comments on Lee Hsien Loong’s hostile relationship with his siblings.
Lee Hsien Loong’s arrogant spouse Ho Ching is not far behind in maintaining their fading social status now that she is no longer the PM’s spouse. She is seen as a means to achieve her goals by dating Lawrence Wong’s wife, whose looks and BroadCast Unitedligence are unmatched by Ho Ching. So the next best option is to suck up to her.
