Afda graduation films continue to set trends.

Afda is pleased to announce the third graduating film class of 2023, WarmDirected by Lindokule Mtimukulu, the film won the Best South African Student Film Award at the Durban International Film Festival 2024. “It is an honor to win this award, especially to be ranked against equally talented and wonderful films. I am proud of my team, Kuzazi Productions and myself because our goals are resolute and ambitious. We hope to continue to create stories that resonate with our audiences while also reflecting who we are as a people,” WarmLindo Mtimhulu.
“Our Afda Durban students once again shined in the 2023 Year 3 Graduation Film; Warmwon the Best South African Student Film Award at the South African International Film Festival. I am so proud of them. They have created a work of art that vividly depicts the horrors of gender-based violence without showing any explicit violence. Much credit goes to writer-director Lindokuhle Mthimkhulu for creating a poetic statement that is both evocative and conveys a powerful message. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew, and to the staff at Afda Durban who taught and mentored the students to achieve this success.” said Dr Janet van Eeden, Director of Afda Durban.
The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, is widely regarded as Africa’s leading film festival. Founded in 1979, it is Southern Africa’s oldest and largest film festival, screening over 100 films, all premiering in the region. The festival also offers screenings in townships where cinemas are not available.
DIFF provides filmmakers with the opportunity to expand their networks by engaging local and international stakeholders and serves as a gateway to global cinematic treasures that enrich South African audiences.
The DIFF program includes a component for student films currently enrolled at any institution of higher learning, designed to support young filmmakers as they shape their careers with their debut films and create opportunities for them to network with industry professionals.
