Retail sales rise slightly in May

Data released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, showed that retail sales increased by 0.8% in May 2024 compared with the same period last year.

The biggest contributors to this growth were:

  • General dealers (1.7%, contributing 0.7 percentage points)
  • food, beverage and tobacco specialty store retailers (4.4%, contributing 0.3 percentage points);
  • Household furniture, appliance and equipment retailers (6.2%, contributing 0.3 percentage points).

The only negative factor was textiles, clothing, footwear and leather products at -4.5% (contribution rate of -0.9 percentage points).

On a seasonally adjusted basis, retail trade sales decreased by 0.7% in May 2024 compared to April 2024. This followed a month-on-month change of 0.5% in April 2024 and a month-on-month change of 1.0% in March 2024.

In the three months ending May 2024, retail trade sales increased by 1.3% compared to the three months ending May 2023. The largest positive contributor to this growth was general dealers (2.9%, a contribution of 1.2 percentage points).

Retail trade sales increased by 0.6% in the three months to May 2024 compared with the previous three months, seasonally adjusted. The biggest contributor to growth was general dealers (0.4%), up 0.2 percentage points.
