The prosecutor’s office accused the three brothers of abandoning their 83-year-old mother, Margarita González Florentín, and not providing her with the necessary assistance for her movements and life.

The defendants, Marcelino González (56), Sulma Rigoberta González (57) and Antonia Vidalina González (60), face charges of breach of the obligation to care for an elderly or disabled person and breach of the statutory obligation on food.
Prosecutor Viviana Sánchez leads the investigation, which focuses on a home located 5.5 kilometers from the San Miguel neighborhood of Franco’s presidential palace on Monday. Margarita González Florentín, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, hypertension and arthritis, was found in an abandoned state without any family care.
The situation came to light because of a complaint from a neighbor to the authorities. After receiving the alarm, the prosecutor’s office and the police rushed to the scene and confirmed that the old woman had been abandoned. According to tax files, the only daughter who took care of Margarita, Alba Rosa González, was also unable to help her because she was a dialysis patient.
Despite an agreement with the Public Defender’s Office in which the children agreed to food assistance, this was not fulfilled. Marcelino González agreed to contribute GH¢500,000 per month, while Sulma Rigoberta and Antonia Vidalina agreed to contribute GH¢300,000 per month each. These funds were meant to be given to Alba Rosa to support her mother, but they never materialized.
The three accused brothers have been remanded to a bondsman court, which will decide their legal status.
