Gerald Grosz’s commentary on the European Football Championship.

Bread and games. Even in ancient Rome, this was a time-tested way for rulers to entertain the people, to give them some good moments and make them forget the sad reality. No offense to the fans, but this European Cup should be understood in a similar way. The stadiums are full, the TV ratings are breaking records, the beer is cold. People quickly forget that social reality is sad. While goals are being scored, people cannot afford the interest on their loans. While people celebrate the Olympics, we are rapidly falling into deindustrialization and unemployment. Amid all the cheering and countless fawning photos of politicians, only one thing is forgotten. One day after the Olympics, the harsh reality of our lives, which has been tortured for five years by inflation, infiltration, economic wars, government failures and individual cases, hits us. Then the games are forgotten, the good mood is forgotten, and anger takes over.
