WASHINGTON: Boeing Co has told suppliers a key production milestone for its 737 jet family will be delayed by three months, two industry sources said, as the company continues to grapple with a crisis that is hitting output.
Sources said a new supplier plan Boeing communicated to the industry calls for monthly production of 737 aircraft to reach 42 in September, compared with the previous goal of reaching that number in June.
Boeing’s aircraft production has slowed dramatically as it faces intense scrutiny from regulators, airlines and lawmakers after a door plug was blown off an Alaska Airlines plane in January.
Boeing’s supplier master schedule lists when suppliers should reach given production rates. Analysts say the schedule does not necessarily reflect actual production, which lags due to factors such as regulatory scrutiny and supply constraints.
However, Boeing’s decision to push back its target suggests the company sees no easing of supply pressures. Rival Airbus, the world’s largest aircraft maker, is also bracing for increased disruptions in the short term due to parts and labor shortages, Reuters reported last month.
The new supplier plan calls for monthly production to reach 47 vehicles by March 2025, compared with 47 vehicles in January of the same year. Monthly production will reach 52 vehicles by September 2025, compared with 52 vehicles in June of the same year.
Boeing shares fell 2.2% in Friday trading.
The company said last month that it would burn more money than make in 2024 and that deliveries in the second quarter would not increase as initially expected. —Reuters
