A week after the European elections, an agreement is close for Ursula von der Leyen to remain as President of the European Commission. During the informal EU summit in Brussels today, several heads of government publicly expressed their support for the German. They want to reach an agreement on how to fill the top positions in the future. The final decision will be made at the EU summit next week. Prime Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) says that the European People’s Party supports Ursula von der Leyen for the presidency of the Commission.

“It is clear that the EPP clearly supports Ursula von der Leyen for the presidency of the Commission and President of the Parliament (Roberta Messora, note)”, Nehammer said in a press statement before the extraordinary summit. Both politicians are members of the EPP. Previously, the prime minister attended the EPP Heads of Government meeting in Brussels.

Scholz: Stable majority

“The elections have brought a stable majority platform that the president of the Commission supports so far, and we are confident that we will be able to reach an agreement between the parties as well as between the countries in the shortest possible time,” said Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the German Social Democrats. “We live in difficult times and it is important to know what happens next in Europe.” A constructive solution must be found quickly, but Scholz believes it should not be based on support from right-wing populist parties.
