In 2022, the Summer Olympic sports federations issued 8.8 million licenses per year, equivalent to one license for every seven residents. The football, tennis and horse riding federations accounted for 44% of the total number of licenses. The number of licenses is higher in the Atlantic coastal regions relative to the local population (Pays de la Loire, Brittany and New Aquitaine) and medium-density urban areas or peri-urban rural areas.

After a sharp drop during the health crisis, the number of licenses issued by Summer Olympic sports federations returned to 2017 levels in 2022. The proportion of women holding licenses has increased over the past five years. Still, in 2022, only a third of licenses are held by women.

Winter Olympic federations issued 134,000 permits, non-Olympic federations issued 1.7 million and Paralympic federations issued 82,000.
