Senator Sarmad Ali Sayeed called for the immediate withdrawal of 
Proposed 10% excise tax on newsprint, stressing the crucial role played by newspapers in combating false information. Amid the growing spread of fake news and disinformation on social media, Sayeed stressed that newspapers are vital in protecting the rights of the people.
“In this age of fake news, where even parents are unwittingly spreading lies on social media, the survival of newspapers is more important than ever,” said Sayeed. “Imposing a 10% GST on newspapers would be a grave mistake. Newspapers are fighting for survival and, in turn, for the preservation of truth and democracy.”
The senator’s remarks came amid a recent heated debate on a budget proposal that includes a controversial tax. Syed highlighted the dire economic conditions facing the country, noting that resources are limited while problems seem endless. He urged his fellow lawmakers to recognize the unique challenges posed by the current media environment.
“During these difficult times, we must support institutions that insist on factual reporting and informed public discussion,” Said argued. “The Senate must send a unified message to the National Assembly to reconsider this tax.”
