Women giving birth on the island are invited to join a team of midwives and participate in May 22, 2024The team chose to hold this event in lieu of the International Day of the Midwife, which is celebrated every year on 5 May.
The event will be held Keyll Darree at Noble’s Site, 2-4 p.m. This will be an opportunity to learn about the island’s maternity services over the past 100 years and refreshments will be provided.
All ages are welcome to participate, however, the team is particularly interested in hearing from older mothers about their experiences and how they differ from those of today’s mothers.
The team will also bury a time capsule on the same day containing photos of the current team and wards, statistics from April 2024 and other documents, including salary structures, charts and job descriptions, with the intention of digging it up again in 2044.
The pod will be buried in the outdoor quadrant overlooked by the maternity ward at Noble Hospital and will feature the Sammie Stork logo – a favourite of the team at Jane Crookall Maternity Unit since its inception.
Senior Midwife Regan Baggley commented:
“This event is not only an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic team on the island, but also an opportunity for women across the island to share their experiences of maternity care over the years. We hope women will come and share their experiences with us, and as professionals we can share how care and service delivery has changed over the last 60-100 years. We are burying the time capsule so that midwives in 2044 can see how things may have changed in 20 years’ time.”
