The glass storefront at Zagreb’s Lovato corner, the sign “Divine Perfume Factory” and the anonymous glass bottles neatly arranged on the shelves are just a rough description of this young perfume factory, which hides new and exotic scents from the niche perfume world. As the owner Katarina Klobuar told us, most people come to her with a purpose, but sometimes a curious person who is completely new to that world takes a peek.

Replacement for perfume bottles

– On my YouTube channel “Purple and Mint” I started talking about perfumes in addition to cosmetics, so it bothered me that certain brands were not available to try and buy in Zagreb. After research and encouragement, I decided to make perfumes closer to people and opened my own perfume shop – Katarina first told us how she started her entrepreneurial career after working in an office.

At first, the unknown might scare you, but when your foot crosses the threshold and your nose touches the fragrant scent of the perfume factory, you will think you are in the right place.

Without any pressure, full of knowledge and with a smile on her face, Katarina will welcome you and she will be happy to share her vast knowledge of niche perfumes with older people as well as with those who are having the opportunity to discover a niche for the first time.

If you are one of those who want to be known for the uniqueness of their unrecognizable fragrance, then niche is the right choice for you.

– When wearing perfume, it should not be important to us what others think of our smell, but according to the culture of wearing perfume and etiquette, we must make sure that our smell does not bother people around us – explains the entrepreneur.

They are designed in small batches with quality raw materials by experts such as perfume lovers, designers and old perfumers. Their goal is not to produce millions of identical bottles for everyone to use, but behind almost every brand there is a special story that shaped it. Therefore, some describe special moments in history, such as the perfume “XXV Marzo”, the scent of the night Dante Alighieri composed “The Divine Comedy”, dedicated to those who are related to music (L’Orchestre), and to you at this moment; combining two senses with one product for a new and unique experience.

A popular trend that’s starting to intrigue perfume lovers is called “layering” – applying two or more fragrances to the same area to create a unique scent.

– In layering, it is a great thing that one can enhance the other, but it is important to pair them well so that they work. This is done by feeling, but also by notes, if they are similar it is fine. It can be fun, but it is not necessarily necessary if more you have a perfume that you love – says Katharina, then adds how to “enhance” the scent and prepare the skin before using it.

– When applying perfume, the skin must be hydrated so that it can be absorbed by the skin. If you have dry skin, this is more difficult to do, so you can use body lotion, a face cream with a fragrance-free or perfume-like scent. In addition, drink plenty of water to hydrate from the inside, and you can add perfume to your clothes and hair as you like, but in small amounts – explains Klobuar. Although many people don’t know it, Katarina’s niche perfume has its own customers.

– The first fragrance I sold here, Profumo di Firenze – ‘Matelda’, is very gentle and feminine. It’s one of the best sellers, it’s really nice, with chamomile, vanilla, violet… And we also have very interesting scents. Some of them smell like ice cream (Buontalenti), bread (Fior di Pane), watermelon (Wavechild), incense (Purple Mantra), apple pie (Jany) and matcha (Je Ne Sais Quoi)…

The brand is very interesting, both because of the scent itself, but also because of more… The background story of how the creator himself got into the world of niche perfumes is mentioned. One of the brands you can find in Katarina is Spiritum, which is related to numerology.

– The brand founder attended a shamanic ceremony in Peru, after which he decided to create perfumes inspired by this experience, most of which contain incense and have a mysterious smell. My favorite perfumes are shamanic, they are based on numerology, so everyone can calculate which number and perfume suits them best based on their date and year of birth. They are developing so much that they are outpacing us in the field of perfumery – he says. The process of concocting a perfume takes from a few minutes to about 20 minutes. During this time, it changes and can be a completely different smell than what it smelled on the “first syringe”.

– The development of the scent is very important, the sensation at the beginning will be different when the perfume settles. We should not judge a perfume by its opening, although brands today create perfumes that will win you over at the first spray, because they know that there is too much competition and you simply don’t have time to wait – explains Katharina.

The question that has always bothered us is which fragrance can be felt on the skin and which fragrance can stay on the skin for a long time?

– How well a perfume projects depends in part on the size of the molecules. The smaller the molecule, the easier it is to sense. Even though everything in this world has its own scent, we can’t smell molecules that are too big. If you smell a perfume and it feels strong, it’s probably performing better. The intensity of scent projection and the quality of a perfume shouldn’t be confused. Projection is the perfumer’s desire, it’s made that way. The light, fluffy scents you love don’t last very long because if they lasted longer, they wouldn’t smell that way. Your skin plays a big role, too, Katharina tells us.

Divine perfumes belong to the world of niche perfumes, “niche”. Niche is quite commercialized nowadays, so these perfumes are really special and carefully selected, just like Klobu. In Zagreb, you will not find these brands in other niche perfume shops: Sora Dora, Teo Cabanel, Room 1015, Carthusia, Profumo di Firenze, L’Orchestre, Milano Fragranze, Spiritum, Botanicae, Maie Piou and Pigmentarium.

– For example, each of L’Orchestre’s fragrances has its own melody that the owner of the perfume can play and enjoy. The Room 1015 fragrance is inspired by Hollywood and stars, they also have a fragrance inspired by the Beatles, groupies of the 1970s and muses of musicians. Then there is Profumo di Firenze, whose black lines are inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. The “XXV Marzo” fragrance recreates the moment when Dante began to write – night, lit candles, skin… “Matelde” and “Niveus” represent heaven, and behind each fragrance there is a story – it guides us Catalina through the fragrances, and then continues:

– Carthusia is a traditional Italian niche brand that was created in Capri in 1948 when monks discovered ancient recipes and formulas to make their own perfumes from herbs from the island. Sometimes people come to me just because of this brand.

Katarina opened her perfume shop in early 2024, but her love of perfume dates back to her childhood.

– I am very satisfied, I currently have 11 brands and I plan to launch a new one every few months – concludes Klobu, who can visit Divinity from Monday to Friday from 11 am to 7 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
