The Southland Residents Comfort Fund (Registered Charity 475) was not only successfully selected by the Co-op as one of sixteen Local Community Fund charities for a 12-month fundraising opportunity this year (2023/2024), but also won a prize of £5,000 through the competition.

The ‘Winners Share It All’ competition is a national campaign for all Co-op members – by spending £5 in store and swiping their card, they are entered into a prize draw from which 10 winners are chosen each month. The campaign launches in April and runs until December 2024, with an unlimited number of entries (every £5 shop is eligible). The successful Co-op member will win a shopping prize worth £500 individually, and the community cause they nominate will win £5,000.
The money will be used to transform Southlands Gardens into a community space for all residents and visitors to enjoy. The gardens currently have their own fruit and vegetable supply, wildflower strips and a variety of beautiful flowers, and provide a peaceful area to enjoy the tranquility. There are also plans to develop a community space with basic cognitive and coordination play equipment to bridge the gap between early learners and residents.
Southlands Nursing Home was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on Tynwald Day in 2003 and plays an important role in providing care for vulnerable elderly people and their families in the south of the island. The Residents’ Consolation Fund is used to provide additional benefits for residents such as outings, parties, Christmas presents and entertainment.
Southlands Manager Rebecca Dooley said:
“The garden is a wonderful space that supports our mental health and wellbeing. The aim of the Amenity Fund is to improve the quality of life for those who live here. Developing the garden will put more smiles on our faces and keep residents on track. I’m so grateful to our customers for nominating our fund and allowing us to push forward a major project that will benefit everyone.”
Maddie Porter, pioneering co-op member, added:
“I am delighted that Southlands has been able to win this prize through the current ‘Winner Shares It All’ competition. This is the first winner for our island and we hope there will be many more in the future.”
“This is fantastic as the winner has a special fondness for care homes and remembers how well her grandmother was looked after during her time there. We encourage all shoppers to sign up and nominate a charity as not only will this benefit a cause close to their heart, they could also win £500 in store credit to put towards their own shopping.”
