On Sunday morning, the greats of the local musical theatre world gathered at the Volksoper Wiener Schauspielhaus to pay tribute to the greats of their guild: the Austrian Music Theatre Prize was awarded for the twelfth time. The host venue won the institutional competition and received four honors. The matinee competition was judged in 23 categories, with Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger” bringing good luck to the singing masters.
The National Opera received one of the main awards with veteran Michael Wöller winning the Best Actor category for his performance as Hans Sachs in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg. In addition, Kate Lindsay received supporting actress honors for her performances in Ulysses und Flandre and Ariadne auf Naxos. The Volksoper, on the other hand, won three prizes for Young Male Talent (Pablo Santa Cruz), Equipment (Julian Crouch in Orpheus in the Underworld) and Young Music Direction Talent (Tobias Vogler). In a moment of reconciliation, both houses received special awards for Youth Projects.
Linz can be pleased with these women, or rather with the regional theatre there and its troupe member Erica Elof. The South African-born soprano won the Best Actress prize for her interpretation of Eva in the local song “Meistersinger” and Marie Marietta in Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt”. According to the expert jury, the best overall musical work also came from Linz, where Heinz Sichrovsky presided, in the form of “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812”.
The Theater an der Wien also took home two trophies. Nikolaus Habjan’s La Périchole won the title of Best Operetta, while conductor Stefan Herheim won the Best Director award for Die Welt. Finally, Bohuslav Martinu’s The Greek Passion, which was rarely performed at the Salzburg Festival last year, was not only named Best Opera Overall, but its conductor Maxime Pascal was also named Best Opera Production.
In addition to the regular awards, a number of special prizes were set up this year, most of which were announced before the awards ceremony. In addition to the old master Harald Serafin (Lifetime Work) and the star soprano Asmik Grigoryan (Grand Jury Prize), the ordinary actor Philipp Hochmayr can also be happy here (Crossover).
