New Delhi: The NCP will announce its candidates for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections after the notification for the first phase of the three-phase elections is issued, NCP vice-president Omar Abdullah said here on Sunday.
The notification for the first phase is expected to be issued on August 20. The voting is expected to take place on September 18.
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said: “It has been less than two days since the election results were announced. Please give us some time, we are preparing. The first phase of the election notification will be issued on August 20. We will announce our candidates after that and hope for success.”
He was asked when the party would announce its election candidates.
Earlier, Abdullah told a private TV news channel that the first task of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly after the elections would be to pass a resolution opposing the Central government’s decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status. In response to the BJP’s accusation that the National Commission was overconfident, the National Commission leader said there was no need for the BJP to talk about overconfidence.
“The BJP has set a new example of overconfidence. In the Lok Sabha elections, who came up with the slogan of 400 yes votes? Not me. It was the BJP’s slogan. Then they talked about 370 yes votes (for seats), but where did they stop? 240 no votes. The BJP had better not talk about overconfidence.
“I am just saying that if people support us, we have hope and we have a chance to govern. We have not counted the number of seats that the BJP has been having, I remember in the 2014 assembly elections, they said 45 seats. The BJP should not talk about this. Let them talk about themselves, let us talk about ourselves,” he added.
Meanwhile, Javid Mirchal, a former PDP MP from Kalna, joined the Nepali Congress and was welcomed by Abdullah and other senior leaders.
The National Committee Vice Chairman said: “It is a blessing for the National Committee that such a leader who is closely connected with the people and has close ties with the people has joined the National Committee today. This is also a sign of which direction the wind is blowing.”
He said Mirchal did not set any preconditions for his joining.
“There was no bargaining. When he met me, he only talked about the people of Karna. He only said that the region should be developed, there should be real representation and the problems of the people should be resolved. We assured him that if God willing and the NC is able to form the government, then we will definitely resolve the problems of Karna,” Abdullah said.
