Paraguayan Civilian Cabinet Chief Minister Leia Jiménez resigned on Monday for personal reasons. She conveyed the decision to President Santiago Peña during a meeting with other ministers at the Mbruvica Roca residence. She also resigned from her position as adviser to the Itaipu Bilateral Entity (EBI).

Jimenez explained that she wanted to “enjoy time with my kids and my family,” so Monday’s decision was “a personal and family decision.”

She added: “As you all know, this decision was not an easy one, but I want to thank President Santiago Peña once again for giving me the opportunity to accompany him and the entire Cabinet team.”

Jimenez also said she knew Pernia’s “unwavering” integrity and professionalism, noting: “I have witnessed firsthand the tremendous sacrifices he and his family make every day in service to our country.”

Pena responded on X: “All I can say is ‘thank you’, you always give the best for our beloved Paraguay.”

He continued: “I am honored to have your talent, but above all, your principles and humanity to help us realize together our dream of building a better country for all Paraguayans.”

According to Asuncion, Pena and Jimenez’s personal friendship dates back about 10 years.

Jimenez’s resignation will take effect on August 15.
