Kathmandu, July 24. Bangladesh establishes an interim government led by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
Yunus was sworn in as chief adviser to the interim government late Thursday. He formed a 17-member cabinet that includes two leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement, Nasid Islam and Asif Mahmood.
Former Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hussain is also in the cabinet.
Yunus, who agreed to lead an interim government based on a proposal by student leaders, did not arrive in Dhaka until Thursday.
The then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on the 21st after students launched protests against the government’s job quotas. The army chief immediately said he would hold a press conference and form an interim government.
Student leaders put forward Yunus’ name to say they would not accept a military-led government. He called for the dissolution of parliament.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced that, in response to student demands, he would appoint Nobel Prize winner Yunus as an interim government and dissolve parliament.
