Twenty-two people, including members of the Dödspatrullen gang, were sentenced to long prison terms in Helsinki, while 12 members of another gang were sentenced in Oulu.
Two Finnish courts sentenced members of a large drug trafficking group on Friday.
The Helsinki District Court handed down its verdict in a major drug case involving nearly 30 defendants, some of whom were linked to the Swedish mafia group Dödspatrullen.
Nine main defendants were convicted of drug smuggling and trafficking and received prison sentences ranging from six to 10 years, with six receiving the maximum sentence of 10 years.
In total, 22 men, most of them in their 20s, were sentenced for smuggling and trafficking more than 100 kilograms of marijuana, more than 100 kilograms of hashish, more than 90 kilograms of amphetamines, more than 15 kilograms of cocaine, more than 150,000 MDMA tablets and about a million alprazolam tablets, also known as Xanax or Xalol.
The drugs were imported in 10 batches. The first batch was hidden in computer cases and sent by mail from Sweden to Finland. The next nine batches were transported by truck from Sweden via Torni Olympia to Hämeenlinna and the capital region.
The court found that the defendants profited from the crimes in the amount of 2 million euros, rather than the 3 million euros estimated by prosecutors.
The court also ruled that nine of the defendants committed the crimes as members of an organized crime group, while prosecutors believed that 13 of the defendants were indeed guilty of this crime.
The defendants include citizens of Sweden and Finland as well as the United Kingdom, Iraq, Norway, Kosovo, Serbia, Somalia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Oulu court sentences 12 people to prison in another case
Also on Friday afternoon, the Oulu Regional Court sentenced a dozen people to prison in another major drug case.
The court found that the criminal group transported hundreds of kilograms of drugs from Sweden to Finland between 2022 and 2023 and distributed them to other parts of Finland via Oulu.
Prosecutor Hannu Koistinen Yle has previously been told that the case represents an attempt by a Swedish organised crime group to gain a foothold in the Oulu and Finnish drug markets.
A total of 19 people were accused of being involved in the gang’s activities, some of whom served as couriers or transferred illegal funds.
Most of the defendants received long prison sentences, including one man in his 20s who was sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison for nine serious drug offences. Another man in his early 40s was sentenced to 11 years in prison for six serious drug offences.
The rest, including two women with Finnish names, received sentences ranging from four to ten and a half years in prison.
Alex Mohammed Al-KhatibBorn in 1983, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for multiple serious drug crimes earlier this week and was considered the mastermind of the case.
A dual Swedish-Palestinian national, he was arrested in Egypt earlier this year.
None of these decisions are yet legally binding and are still subject to appeal.
