A court has remanded in custody 13 employees of the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) who were arrested in an alleged operation to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into prisons.
The two arrested employees were produced in court for a remand decision and the court ordered them to be remanded in custody for five days. The remaining 11 have been ordered to remain in custody pending trial.
The case is under further investigation.
Police said in a news release Thursday evening that an operation was underway in which Corrections Department employees were allegedly suspected of smuggling drugs and cellphones into the prison.
Police say 18 correctional officers were helping to smuggle cell phones and drugs into the prison.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdullah Sharif said BroadCast Unitedligence information showed that money had been deposited in the accounts of 18 police officers. Sharif said a total of Rs 73.6 million had been deposited in the officials’ accounts since January last year.
Sharif said the money was deposited into accounts of prisoners and people identified in the criminal environment.
Minister of Internal Security and Technical Affairs Ali Ihsan said that accepting bribes from people with trust and confidence is a crime and the strictest legal action will be taken against those who give and take bribes.
A total of 13 correctional officers have been arrested so far in the operation, including nine from Mafuxing. Two men were arrested in KS while the arrests were carried out in Kashidu and one man was also arrested in Malayalam and Ussime.
