The left-wing think tank Żminijietna called on local communities to build more convenient and safer sidewalks.
“There is an urgent public demand for convenient and safe sidewalks in the area. This is an important factor for social well-being,” Zminigitna said in a press statement.
They point to the Local Councils Association’s claim that promised pedestrianisation funding “never arrived”, which is a “sad” situation.
The group pointed out a number of issues in public spaces, including broken sidewalks, unplanned lowering of curbs, illegal dumping of trash bags and abusive behaviour by commercial entities.
“Pedestrianizing streets can create attractive public spaces, encourage people to walk, use public transport more, and foster a sense of community,” they said.
Furthermore, the organisation noted “with satisfaction” the various projects Malta is implementing in this regard across the country, noting the investments made in the replanning of the Msida-Pieta promenade.
