Singapore: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky He told the Shangri-La Dialogue on Sunday (June 2) that diplomacy in the form of a peace summit later this month was the best way to end the “brutal war” that has killed thousands of people in the country since 2022.
Zelensky said in a speech and question-and-answer session at the Singapore Security Conference that 106 countries and organizations had signed the Swiss peace summit agreement, but he noted that it was disappointing that some world leaders had not yet expressed their support. He said Russia was trying to undermine peace efforts.
“We firmly believe that our world longs to unite and be able to act in complete harmony,” Zelensky said.
He also thanked countries including the United States, Germany and the Netherlands for their military assistance, particularly air defense systems. Zelensky cited Russia’s attack of nearly 100 missiles on Sunday – something he said had happened hundreds of times – and noted that “no country can handle this situation alone.”
Meeting with leaders
Zelenskiy and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov spoke with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for more than an hour on the sidelines of the meeting on Sunday.
Asked by reporters as they left the meeting, the Ukrainian president said the meeting went “very well.” Austin did not comment.
Austin briefed Zelenskiy on Washington’s military assistance to Kyiv and “reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to maintaining strong support” during the meeting, a Pentagon official said after the meeting, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
“The two leaders committed to further strengthening the strategic defense partnership between the United States and Ukraine,” a Pentagon official said.
