The 2024 Paris Olympics should serve as a lesson and motivation for the bronze queens, as they previously performed poorly and exited the tournament without a single point.
Zambia lost all three of its group matches, including a 0-3 defeat to Unit Stats, and a 5-6 defeat to Australia after leading 5-2, a match the team needed to win to get the league back on track, only to lose 1-4 to Germany in the final.
The Bruce Mwape-coached side went out with zero points, creating a record that Zambia did not want, a far cry from the resolve they showed at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and when they were awarded a draw in their exit.
Therefore, the defeat of the Copper Queen team left many people with many questions, especially about the tactical incompetence of the technical staff and the far-fetched idea of participating in the game.
Against Australia, it was clear that the technical staff lacked tactics, which was evident in the decisions they made and their reading of the game, especially after leading Australia 5-2. The worst outcome would have been a draw at least.
The Tech bench was sluggish in many clear situations, watching players unable to complete more than five passes due to uncoordinated play. Unfortunately, there was also an element of self-fulfilling proponents and some questionable defence in that game, and betting cannot be ruled out.
Secondly, the biggest controversy and question is, is this the right time to release coach Bruce Mwape? If he stays, then what needs to be done to help him?
To help the coach, FAZ must ensure that he obtains a CAF professional license between now and the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Mwape has the opportunity to build capacity but FAZ needs to be very clear about this.
Will the association be willing to fire him, or will he take a leave of absence or find someone to compensate for his incompetence?
But there is always the danger that someone who might bring problems could permanently occupy the top job, and again care needs to be taken not to bring someone who will only cause more hostility.
So if Bruce is appointed, can FAZ find a coach who has achieved more than him to take over because at the moment, whether people like it or not, Bruce stands out among all Zambian coaches because his work is convincing and needs to be done with caution.
Is it the right time for foreign coaches to take over women’s football? Obviously yes, but we need to have a clear idea of who the coaches we bring in are and whether FAZ can afford to pay the high salaries these coaches demand while Bruce is being paid a pittance.
Both the coaching staff and the competition system need to be updated. For example, even during the qualifiers, the quality of the midfield was worrying.
Some people ask, does that team have a natural defensive midfielder? All three games we won in qualifying were made up of makeshift midfielders.
The bench, led by Mwape, has trained the team and the rest is the icing on the cake.
Bruce can take a break and then finally go to the delayed CAF Elite Course he deserves.
But the question is what are the options because now every carpenter who wants to boost their resume wants to get this job because they know it is now prestigious and it is a plug and play team.
Wishing you all a great sports weekend, hopefully we can win a medal or two for Zambia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, remember to interact via email eliaschipepo@gmail.com
