The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) says the feasibility study for the Batoka Hydropower Station has been reviewed.
ZRA chief executive Munyaradzi Munodawafa said in an interview yesterday that a review of the project’s demonstration structure, power plant and capacity output has been completed.
Mr Munodawafa said the authority was currently awaiting the second phase of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
“We have reviewed the feasibility study of the Batoka Hydropower Station. Studies of the project’s demonstration structure, power plant structure and capacity output have been completed,” Mr Munodawafa said.
The study and environmental impact assessment are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2015, he said.
Mr Munodawfa said consultants were currently handling other processes ahead of a project committee consisting of senior government officials, utility companies and the ZRA to inspect the project this month.
He said once all these processes are completed, the ZRA will be able to select a developer for the project, after which the authority will be able to come up with the actual value of the project.
Zambia and Zimbabwe have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in launching the Batoka hydropower project, which is expected to cost approximately US$4 billion.
The agreement was signed during the recent ministerial meeting in Kariba, Siafunga.
