Minister of Tourism and Economic Development Dr. Ernest Hilaire says Saint Lucia’s high-profile participation in the Paris Olympics has the potential to boost the country’s marketing and promotion efforts.

Over the past year, Saint Lucia has been in the spotlight for its sports tourism initiatives, successfully hosting major global sporting events such as the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup. The country received positive feedback for its role in hosting the event.

Sprinter Julien Alfred is part of a four-man team representing Saint Lucia at the Paris Olympics, which Hillaire believes presents a major opportunity for marketing and branding the country.

He highlighted the success of other countries, particularly those in the Caribbean, in using the achievements of their athletes to promote national sports.

Dr. Hilaire highlighted the global platform provided by the Olympics and said the worldwide attention being paid to Team Saint Lucia was a great thing for the country.

“There is no bigger stage than the Olympics and the whole world will be watching the Saint Lucia team, which is a great thing for Saint Lucia,” Dr. Hillaire said.

He also noted that if Julian performs well in the sprint events, which are traditionally dominated by Jamaican and American athletes, it would be a fantastic achievement for St. Lucia and further enhance the country’s global profile.

Dr. Hillaire maintained that the World Games provided an ideal platform for national marketing and branding, from which many countries and even some smaller islands benefited. He noted that despite its small size and geographical disadvantage, the Caribbean, especially Jamaica and other islands, thrived on the athletic excellence of its athletes (track and field).

“If your athletes perform well, that’s even better,” he added. “It does give you great publicity… so the participation of Saint Lucia is a huge boost for us and puts us on the world stage.”
