The World Health Organization declared on Wednesday that the continued spread of African swine fever constitutes a global health emergency, warning that the virus could eventually cross borders, according to the Associated Press.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement following a meeting of the UN health agency’s emergency committee. The WHO said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths in Africa this year, already surpassing last year’s figures.
