WHO calls for expanded pathogen research to uncover hypothetical new pandemics threatening health |

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday asked researchers and governments to expand their research on pathogens that could evolve and cause future pandemics, citing Cause diseases like flu, covid-19 or tuberculosis.

The recommendation, backed by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), is part of a report presented by the World Health Organization at the Global Summit on Epidemic Preparedness in Brazil this week.

“As we prepare for the next pandemic, we need a combination of science and political resolve,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today.

The report, written by 200 scientists from more than 50 countries, said: Research priorities must expand to create knowledge and tools that can adapt quickly to emerging health threats.

In this line, WHO recommends using prototype pathogens (known pathogens) as a guide to develop knowledge about entire pathogen families And explore these factors to find new factors that may lead to new epidemics.

They warn that these pathogens are mainly found in biodiversity-rich parts of the world, but these places are poorly studied and monitored because the scientific community in the region does not have the infrastructure or resources.

To overcome this obstacle, the World Health Organization has advocated for “collaborative and coordinated” research around the world to prepare for possible pandemics.

Tedros stressed: “Improving our understanding of the many pathogens around us is a global project that requires the participation of scientists from all countries.”

To facilitate this goal, WHO is working with research institutions around the world to launch an open research collaborative for each pathogen family to connect researchers, developers, funders and other experts on that pathogen. (I)
