It is only a three-minute walk from the hotel. Forgione is a friendly new restaurant that you might think is Italian, but in fact, the menu designed by chef Marc Forgione is multinational.
Appetizers were cute little “whole-wheat bagels” stuffed with veggie cream cheese in a nod to a New York classic, while the carefully crafted cocktails came with a Russian roulette of green peppers, and we perused the menu, unsure which would be the heat bomb.
The service was impeccable and the menu was well-informed, which was a highlight as “Lao sushi” was new to us, but we got the sole fillet, which came on a small bed of sticky rice. Main courses included a delicious Elysian Fields lamb, served with lamb croquettes, hummus and Panelle (a rectangular Sicilian chickpea pie).
One key factor has clearly changed since my last visit, before the pandemic hit – the price of transportation. Even without surge pricing, a 10- to 15-minute Uber ride typically costs $40 (S$54) to $50, so the subway is really the most convenient and quickest way to get around. Of course, the subway and walking are also great ways to offset the temptation of delicious food at almost every turn and street corner.
On the cultural front, two new exhibitions have attracted huge crowds since their opening. The first exhibition is at the jaw-dropping Morgan Libraryone of Manhattan’s most underrated and least-visited attractions.
