The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has pledged to help residents of the St Peters Six township to resolve issues concerning the ownership of the land they live on.
Opposition Leader, Barrister Ralph Thorne KC, said the party made the commitment after meeting residents as part of its community connection program last Saturday.
The waterfront community is just steps away from the Pendry Hotel, which is currently under construction. When completed, the $100 million project is expected to include 74 waterfront rooms and suites, 46 private residences, a spa, fitness center, kids club and 111-berth marina.
Thorne said residents felt very “unsafe” after the patrols.
“This is a disputed area of land and many residents are unsure of the status of their land titles and we have undertaken investigations on their behalf to ensure that their rights to these lands are secure,” Thorne said.
“We’re not just interested in voting this time, we want to do something tangible for the people who live here, and that will be part of our mission going forward, making sure these land ownership issues are resolved.”
The party’s political leaders said they would write to the Ministry of Housing and Lands to seek clarification on title deeds as people have the right to know their status.
“What stands out is that a lot of them have lived here for 30, 40, 50 years; if someone has lived on this land for 30, 40, 50 years then they should not feel insecure about their tenure so we will be looking into that.
“As I said, in addition to the voting and registration issues, we also want to make sure that these people have some security of tenure over the land and that they should not continue to be illegal occupants for an uncertain future but should become landowners.”
Some of those who built homes there also live illegally, and residents are unsure whether they will be asked to relocate.
Once that process is complete, they will return to the community, he said.
Wearing a hat with the slogan “Value Your Vote,” Thorne explained that the community connection program is a two-pronged approach – connecting with people and making sure they are on the voter rolls.
The Democratic Labor Party suffered a series of 30-0 defeats in elections. Thorne switched to the Democratic Party in February and said at a press conference this year that the party is ready and ready at any time.
Speaking alongside him was local pastor Lynroy Scantlebury, who was running as an independent candidate. Lynroy Scantlebury said while they could sense the frustration of Six residents, the response from the community had been “very strong” and the issue of land ownership should be high on the government’s agenda. In previous visits by The Nation to Six, residents said they felt frustrated and lacked understanding of the rapid development taking place around them. There has also been temporary displacement recently due to changes to the community’s main road.
