Kathmandu, August 6. The government has decided to lift the ban on the social network Tiktok.
The Council of Ministers meeting held on Thursday decided to lift the ban on Tiktok if certain conditions are met.
To implement this policy decision, Tiktok must reach an agreement with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications. “This is a policy issue,” said government spokesman and Communications Minister Prithvisubba Gurung. “We have to meet our conditions to implement it.”
He said that each social network should now be included in the department’s list in accordance with Article 3 of the “2080 Guidelines for the Operation of Social Networks”. Thereafter, contract points should be designated in accordance with Article 6.
During the discussion, Tiktok representatives agreed to be listed in Nepal and the contract point was determined.
In addition, the government has put forward four conditions. The government’s conditions are to support tourism promotion, support digital security and literacy, and support public education based on quality and information technology.
Likewise, filtering and moderation of Nepali or Nepali native language on Tiktok should be ensured. Communications Minister Gurung said, “If Tiktok is shut down for whatever reason, filtering should be done to avoid such situations.”
The government said that apart from abusive language, language that spreads social ills and social crimes must not be used. “This also applies to other networks,” Minister Gurung said.
