Samoa Reference Book on the Protection of the Samoan Language and Writing
The first Samoan language dictionary was distributed at a ceremony at the American Samoa College (ASCC) on Thursday, July 11, 2024, attended by American Samoa Governor PS Lemanu and Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa of Samoa.
A release from the Governor’s Office said the book, which contains the meanings of 27,000 Samoan words and is 800 pages long, is an important step in preserving the Samoan language.
Farewell Toto Toto Toto Toto Toto Malemo was the speaker for the day and he welcomed and thanked the distinguished guests from Samoa as well as the leaders of the Government of American Samoa for their participation.
But the opening request was made by Catholic Bishop Kolio Tumanuvao of the Samoa-Pago Pago Diocese, who spoke about the value of human language through its clear preservation and translation.
The main speech of the day was attended by His Excellency Bishop Fiame, who thanked His Excellency for his blessing on this important day and encouraged His Excellency to continue the work of the Lord and spread the spiritual message.
“The battle is about brothers standing on bamboo, not brothers fighting each other,” said Fiam. “Maybe this work will strengthen our relationship.”
The Prime Minister’s speech stressed the importance of this work in preserving the Samoan language and that the book will be accessible to all Samoans. He expressed the hope that the book will serve as a learning tool for future generations of Samoan and American Samoan children.
American Samoa works with federal partners to strengthen authorities on lifelong detention
Representatives from the federal government and SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) and the federal government’s VA office held a meeting at the Office of Veterans Affairs (VA) on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. After they visited the office of Governor Utule.
As stated in an announcement from the Governor’s Office, the meeting discussed issues and ways to prevent and protect the people of the territory, from empowerment to suicide prevention.
This is part of the American Samoa government’s suicide prevention challenge since 2022 for federal government armed forces members, veterans and their families.
Taking a new path for future development
A special ceremony was held on Monday morning in Tau, Manuá to celebrate the inauguration of the new road as well as the dedication of the land intended for the construction of a new Department of Home Affairs Hospital (DOH) to serve the public in the Manuá Islands.
The Rev. Mr. Joseph Audele of EFKAS Talk, Light of the World announced the requirements for this important ceremony.
Governor Lemanu PS Mauga in a special address expressed gratitude to the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Silva Group of Companies for the completion of the expressway project and the launch of the new hospital in Tau.
