To send a message about municipal employees being late for work, Walvis Bay acting chief executive David Uushona locked the doors of the municipal building at 8am yesterday.
According to him, being late has become a common phenomenon.
Ushauna said he informed employees on August 7 that they “need to be in the office and ready to work before 08:00 instead of arriving at 08:00”.
At 8 o’clock in the morning, Ushuna, with the help of security personnel, closed the main door and visited each office to check who was there and who was not.
“My main concern is with management because they have to set the example. If management is late, that’s a serious problem.”
After a brief “lockdown” and a brief visit by the media, it became apparent that many offices remained locked and staff were not at their desks.
“This reflects poorly on the quality of service we provide and is not the way we wanted to welcome our new CEO. This behaviour does not reflect good customer relations or our commitment to our work,” he said.
Ushauna explained that the city government’s core values — respect, responsibility, professionalism, integrity and teamwork — should guide the conduct of all employees.
“Being late shows that we have no respect for our clients or colleagues. We must be responsible for our actions and being late undermines professionalism. In addition, asking for full wages for the day when arriving late and leaving early does not show integrity,” he said.
“I expect that when our new CEO arrives, there will be noticeable improvements in these areas. I also encourage you to visit our satellite offices at 8am and observe how they go about their work.”
He added that the new chief executive, Victoria Kapenda, is expected to take up the post on Monday, September 2.
