Cohen said the wind pushed the fire towards some “light fuels” which “created a lot of smoke and that smoke went all the way to Amberley and sometimes even into Waipara itself.”
Winds are expected to exceed 100 km/h on Tuesday.

Cohen said that although the fire was far from residential buildings, necessary evacuation plans were in place.
“Crews will be closely monitoring the fire overnight. Multiple crews, helicopters and heavy machinery will be on scene ready to continue containment efforts from the morning.”
All outdoor fires have been banned in Canterbury until Monday due to warm weather and strong winds.
The Fire and Emergency Management Agency has declared a fire ban for the Canterbury region.
All previously issued fire permits are no longer valid, the statement said.
