We will create a media space that respects high standards of reporting, which is essential for an informed citizenry and the healthy functioning of a democratic society, while credible and effective self-regulatory bodies with media literacy and positive structures will further contribute to media integrity and professionalism, the Minister of Culture and Media announced. She noted that “at today’s intergovernmental meeting, we received a positive IBAR evaluation, opening a new chapter in Montenegro’s relations with the European Union (EU) and bringing our citizens closer to long-awaited perspectives and opportunities.”
– The commitment of the governments of Montenegro and our country to the European agenda and the measurable results achieved were key to this success, the management of the Ministry of Culture and Media and the adopted Media Law made a strong contribution to this process – she said in a statement.
She added that “Montenegro has made limited progress in terms of freedom of expression and the media sector, with the adoption of the Law on Media, the Law on Audiovisual Media Services and the Law on Public Media Services, based on the Commission’s proposals. The government, which was part of the conditions for obtaining a positive IBAR, has made significant progress in improving the status and freedoms of the media and democratic principles”.
– These laws are the result of long consultations with all stakeholders, including the media, NGOs, trade unions and you, our valued international partners. The expert support of our European partners was essential in developing laws that will ensure freedom of expression, greater rights for journalists and greater responsibility of the media in accordance with European standards and directives. Their unanimous adoption in Parliament is the result of the sense of responsibility and maturity of all political subjects, who are aware of the importance of obtaining a positive IBAR and recognize the government’s efforts to conclude as soon as possible a process of great significance for the well-being of citizens. He assessed that “we have an unshakable commitment to improving media freedom and democratic standards, which is why transparency, responsibility and professionalism are the foundations on which we build our media sector and objectively provide information to citizens.”
– We have improved the legislative framework, and the most important task for the future is the consistent application of the adopted laws in order to successfully cope with new challenges and technological changes in the media landscape. We will create a media space that respects high standards of reporting, which is essential for an informed citizenry and the healthy functioning of a democratic society, and this will be further contributed by credible and effective self-regulatory bodies with media literacy and a positive structure that respects media integrity and professionalism. Thank you for recognizing our efforts in the process of adopting three important laws, and thank you for your continued joint efforts in the future to successfully implement them and improve the media framework in Montenegro, the first future member of the European Union. We are more ready than ever to negotiate and complete the pre-accession tasks, which will not only strengthen the rule of law in our country, but also comprehensively improve the quality of life of our residents, Vujović said.
She said, “In the EU, we have strong partners who will continue to support us in taking the next steps on the road to integration.”
