On Friday, November 17, the sentence against a 49-year-old resident of the Lyakhovichi district for resisting police officers involving the use of violence came into force.
According to reports Bella Pan Senior prosecutor of the Brest regional prosecutor’s office Nadezhda Nekrasevich said that on the afternoon of July 22 in Baranovichi, a man sat drunkenly on the steps of a store in the city.
When a police patrol officer wanted to detain a man for being intoxicated in a public place, he resisted and hit the officer in the face with his elbow.
As a result, the police officer suffered minor injuries, including a broken nose and bruising on the upper eyelid of his right eye.
On October 4, the Baranovichi District and Baranovichi City Courts found that a resident of the Lyakhovichi District had resisted internal affairs officers while performing their duties to maintain public order, involving the use of violence (Article 363, Part 2 of the Criminal Code) and sentenced him to two years and six months of imprisonment with free confinement in a high-security prison.
The court also ordered the man to undergo compulsory treatment due to his long-term alcoholism. The defendant in the criminal case appealed against the sentence, believing it was too harsh.
On November 17, the criminal case panel of the Brest Regional Court upheld the verdict of the first instance court without changing it. The man had previously been convicted three times: torture, attempted murder and rape.
