Pillar- Suriname benefits from a president and a political party that is not sponsored by the wealthy elite. A large part of the funding for the VHP 2020 campaign came from wealthy capitalists in our country.
There are strong indications that this will also be the case in the upcoming elections.
It would be naive to think that these sponsors are donating millions of dollars out of good intentions. Donors must fully recoup the funds they invest.
That is why VHP always takes into account the interests of the casino industry and other funding sectors during its policy years.
The interests of the lenders prevailed rather than those of Surinamese society, which was going through a very difficult time economically.
In short, VHP’s elite financing disadvantages low-income Surinamese people.
It would be better if political parties in Suriname did not receive money from the rich, powerful elites.
Such a party could provide fairer governance, focused on the needs of the people rather than the wishes of wealthy donors.
This could lead to fairer policies that focus more on the general well-being of the people. It would reduce corruption and lead to more transparent governance.
Furthermore, it will provide an opportunity to address social inequalities in the country and ensure more balanced economic growth that benefits all sections of the people.
Such a government can restore people’s confidence and lay a solid foundation for Suriname’s sustainable development.
