Venezuelan woman says: ‘I was kidnapped, robbed, shot and left for dead by a taxi driver at a popular city hotel’
Kaieteur News – A Venezuelan woman on Wednesday narrated how she jumped into the bushes behind Diamond Town in East Bank Demerara (EBD) on a rainy night after she was allegedly abducted, robbed, shot and then dumped dead by a taxi driver from a well-known hotel in the city.
The woman, Diana Danello, 29, a mother of one, said someone brutally tried to murder her on the night of April 10. Although three months had passed, the bullet was still lodged in the woman’s body.
X-rays seen Kaieteur News The bullet lodged in the woman’s back, near her spine. Danello was reportedly robbed of $300,000 in cash and an iPhone 15 Pro Max by a taxi driver she trusted.
The matter was reported to the Diamond Police Station but the suspect was never arrested and is still working at the hotel in the city.
“I gave them his phone number, a picture of his car, even where he worked and the last place I tracked my iPhone, and told them the hotel had cameras that would show when he would pick me up at the hotel, but they did nothing (translated from Spanish),” the woman said, adding that every time she asked for an update, investigators told her they were still verifying the information she provided.
“They (detectives) were more interested in my personal life, what I was doing, who I was with in the hotel, and even tried to blackmail me. They asked me questions that had nothing to do with the case (translated from Spanish),” the Venezuelan woman accused.
As a result, the woman was forced to flee Guyana and return to Venezuela because she feared for her life and was experiencing this trauma on a daily basis. The woman said that leaving Guyana was the best option for her because the suspects were at large and could find her and try to kill her.
However, after reading the news that a Venezuelan woman, Evelyn Alves, better known as Fabiana Betancourt, was shot and killed in Diamond on Sunday, she decided to go public with her story.
Danello said that while Alves’ killer may not be the same person who tried to kill her in April, she believes remaining silent could lead to the deaths of other vulnerable women.
Recalling the evening of April 10
When asked to recount what happened on April 10, Danello said she had planned to party that night, so she left home with a large amount of cash. She first went to the popular hotel for dinner. She then left the hotel in a taxi driver’s SUV.
She told Kaieteur News This was not the first time she had travelled with the taxi driver as she frequently visited the hotel.
“He’s always well-dressed and professional (translated from Spanish),” said the woman, who trusted the hotel’s taxi base because it was like an executive service.
However, on April 10, the taxi driver suddenly turned into a monster, according to reports. Instead of taking her to her destination, he locked her in the car, threatened her with a gun, took her to a secluded area behind Diamond, and turned off the lights.
Once they got there, he reportedly held her at gunpoint and demanded she hand over her wallet and other valuables. Danello claims she told him he could take what he wanted but he had to spare her life.
He took her wallet, which contained her house keys, cash, her ID and other documents, as well as her cell phone. But he appeared to have no intention of letting her leave alive, as he tried to shoot her in the head, the woman said.
“He tried to shoot me, to kill me, I mean, he literally shot me two, three, four times with a gun and nothing came out (imitates gun noises) (he tried to shoot me) I’m right… he tried to shoot me two, three, four times and nothing came out, the gun made a noise (imitates gun noises),” she told Kaieteur News.
It’s possible the gun was jammed, but the woman said she didn’t think it was loaded at the time.
Instead of letting her go, the suspect tried to strangle her with a belt.
“He grabbed and removed his belt and tried to strangle me, but God gave me the strength and I fought him and I kicked him in the balls,” she recalled.
As she battled the disease, her body took some hits, too. The most painful, she said, was her breasts, which she underwent surgery on.
During the desperate struggle, the taxi driver reportedly lost the chain he was wearing and seconds later he let her go to look for it. She recalled that he asked her where the chain was and that was when she was able to escape his grip and get out of the car and into the pouring rain.
She recalled running a short distance when the taxi driver told her he was going to kill her because she knew his face and place of work.
It is said that at this point the man pulled out his gun and shot her again. This time the gun went off accidentally and she ran for her life.
She claimed that she didn’t know she was hit at the time, but she realized she might not be able to escape his attack.
“Yo me tire pa el monte (I ran into the bush),” the Venezuelan woman said, recalling seeing the taxi driver step out of the SUV with a flashlight and search the surroundings.
She reportedly stayed in the bushes until he got back in his car and left. She then stood up and walked in the pouring rain until she came across a man selling items at a roadside stall.
There she sought help but the man said he had no mobile phone to call her but suggested she wait until the rain stopped and then he would take her to the hospital.
She was afraid he would hurt her too, so she continued walking in the rain. She said cars passed by but she was unwilling to accept any help from the drivers. However, a man stopped and identified himself as a police officer.
“Y me llevo a la (Diamond) police station (Then he took me to the police station)”. She said that when she got there, she realized that someone had tried to murder her and that they happened near the police station.
After seeing her condition, the police suggested that she go to the hospital. The police who picked her up took her to the nearest hospital and she was admitted.
There, she learned that a bullet had entered one of her arms and lodged in her back. Doctors were unable to remove the bullet. She also suffered broken ribs from the blows she sustained. The detective then recorded a statement from her.
When she recovered and was discharged from the hospital, she returned to the Diamond Police Station to make a formal statement. She recalled that the police did all the initial investigations and even took her back to the scene, but as the days passed, the investigators seemed no longer interested in the case.
Tired of traveling and fearing for his life, Danello returned to Venezuela.
Kaieteur News Police were contacted for updates, but calls and WhatsApp messages went unanswered. However, this publication has confirmed that the suspect identified by Danello is indeed still working at the city’s hotel, but has not been at work for two days. His colleagues said they did not know where he was. The SUV he was driving when he abducted and robbed the Venezuelan woman that night was reportedly parked in the hotel’s parking lot.
Coincidentally, shortly after the Venezuelan woman posted her story on Facebook, the suspect disappeared and calls to his cell phone were diverted to voicemail.
