A joint US-French operation, assisted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), on Saturday seized 4,400 kilograms of cocaine worth €176 million, or more than $200 million, at various locations near an illegal airstrip at Matthews Ridge in Region 1 (Barima-Waini), said to be one of the largest airstrips in the region.

The drugs were destroyed on site yesterday but police have taken samples as their investigation continues.

“The operation was conducted based on intelligence regarding illegal flights into Guyana and supported by information shared by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and other international partners,” the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) said in a statement yesterday.
