So far this year, the Uzbek Cosmos agency has detected 1,960 cases related to the burning of straw and its residues on 23,273 hectares of land cleared of grain crops.
As of July 2024, the National Security Service of Uzbekistan, together with the Prosecutor’s Office, has identified 1,960 cases related to the burning of straw and its residues on 23,273 hectares of grain-free land in the republic. The agency’s press service informed Gazeta.uz about this.
Most of the burned areas are located in the following regions: Tashkent region 9638 hectares (439 cases), Surkhandarya region 5007 hectares (562 cases), Samarkand region 1711 hectares (191 cases), Namangan region 29 hectares (112 cases), Jizzakh region 931 hectares (54 cases), Fergana region 65 hectares (11 cases), Andijan region 3868 hectares (319 cases).
Three to five times the base amount calculated in accordance with Article 88 of Part 3 of the Code on Administrative Liability, concerning the person responsible for allowing the burning of straw in fields without food, “Uzbekistan”, the official, mentioned that a fine of five to ten times the amount will be determined for individuals, and the damage to the land and plants will also be calculated and compensated accordingly.
It is known that burning one stalk of grain on one hectare of land releases 500 grams of nitrogen oxides, 379 grams of hydrocarbons, 3 kilograms of ash, 20 kilograms of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide (CO) into the atmosphere. This leads to tuberculosis and cancer in humans, environmental pollution and reduced soil fertility.
